A life lived giving love

Eleanor was born in a little house on NE 32nd and Going, June 15, 1922, the third and youngest child of Conrad and Paula Skogmo, Norwegian immigrants. They moved to their family home at 6227 N. Denver, with her brothers Claire and Roy when she was about 6 months old. She would spend the rest of her life on that street within three houses. She was baptized into the faith, in Luther League, confirmed and married here at Bethel.

She was a tomboy at Ockley Green Grammar School and Graduated from Jefferson High School in June of 1940. She was always proud to tell the tale of the voting for the sorority girl’s perfect body; she won ‘best body’. Along with her family she was active in the Son’s of Norway, in the Gjoa youth group and participated in the Leikkeringen Dance team.

In January 1942 Eleanor first dated her future husband Al for just 19 days before he was drafted in to Army to serve in World War Two. She promised him she would wait for him and she keep her word even though many men tried to court her. One of her fun stories was of a boy during that time she thought was getting a little to ‘fresh’ with her on the front porch of her parents house. She asked him to wait then turn the hose on him.

During the war she worked at the Shipyards, and volunteered as an aide at the Vanport Hospital. When Al returned they wasted little time and got married on November 24, 1945. She and AL were active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars post 1325. She was a president of the woman’s auxiliary. She worked at Stark’s Vacuum and got Al his career job there.

In 1956 Eleanor and Al got baby "Chris" and parenthood stared in the Ness home. She spent many years as a homemaker providing for the needs of her husband and son. Through Grade

School Eleanor was involved in PTA and served as president. She enjoyed Bowling and was on a league for many years. When her Mom and Aunt Olga became ill she devoted much time to caring for them.

She was proud of her Norwegian heritage and Al and she returned to that country 3 times to meet over 50 first cousins and visiting the childhood homes of her grandparents. She studied the language to make communicating easier and enjoyed being able to write in Norwegian in the Christmas cards that she sent them. The trips spurred on return visits from many relatives that she enjoyed so much.

The news 1981 news that she was going to be a grandmother brought her to tears of joy. Jeremy was born in April of 82 with Jennifer following in 84. They brought her much happiness and she always had unending love and patience with them. Worrying over loved ones was a special skill that she had, and that sure carried on with them as well.

Al’s retirement in 1984 meant a slower and more enjoyable life for Eleanor. Even though she had health problems she managed trips to Disneyland and other fun place with the grandchildren. She and Al got a motor home and enjoyed summers at the ocean in Westport or with friends at the property on the Nehalem River at Jewel.
